Social media got mad at the fashion magazine for misusing a term that means more than borrowing your boyfriend’s flannel.
BODY Superstar power couple Gigi and Zayn graced the world-famous fashion magazine’s August cover in asporting bedazzled sports jackets and the cover story kept referring to the straight cisgendered couple as “gender fluid”. The story used examples likes Zayn borrowing Gigi’s t-shirts even though they tight on him, or Gigi talking about how both she and Zayn would wear slim fitting jeans and a big drapey coat.
Backlash descended swiftly upon the piece, with many on social media taking issue with both the fact that the poster children for this gender fluid neither identify as as non-binary or gender-fluid and that Vogue seemed to misunderstand what gender fluid actually means, which is not having a fixed a gender – basically conflating fashion choice with gender identity. People mocked the tone deafness of the magazine, with one
The magazine responded with a statement on Friday saying, “The story was intended to highlight the impact the gender-fluid, non-binary communities have had on fashion and culture,” the statement read. “We are very sorry the story did not correctly reflect that spirit – we missed the mark. We do look forward to continuing the conversation with greater sensitivity.”
Well, what do you think? Did Vogue mess up with using Gigi and Zayn as the faces on non-conforming gender identity? What do you think the couple is going to say in response?
